Is it acceptable for a woman to enter a pub or bar on her own?

In the UK, women and men have equal rights e.g. in relationships or in employment. Women are free to enter any public building, such as pubs and cinemas on their own. However, in terms of personal safety it is advisable to try to walk home with a friend, especially at night; if you can't, try to make sure someone knows where you are and when you'll be back.

You should also be aware of any inappropriate behaviour towards you by people you do not know, especially men that might lead to potentially dangerous situations. If you feel threatened or frightened you should tell the staff of the pub or bar and make every effort to try and get a friend to join you or pick you up from there. You should also drink alcohol slowly and in moderation. In general, it is always better to enter pubs and bars with a group of friends or people that you know you can trust.

All students living in University Managed Property and those attending the International Student Induction are entitled to a free personal alarm, so make sure you receive one when you obtain your keys. For other students, personal alarms are available in the Students' Union shop for a small price.
