Will I be able to travel without restriction within the UK while I am studying?

As an international student you may travel without restriction in the UK throughout the period of your studies. There are many air, sea, road and rail links that connect the areas of the UK.

Cities in the UK are connected by a railway network and by frequent coach services. Many UK travel organisations offer special discounted fares for students. If you buy a Young Person's Railcard or a Student Coach Card, for example, you will get reduced fares on most journeys. For further details, ask at any main railway or coach stations. The main rail stations in Bristol are Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway. Bristol Coach station is situated on Marlborough Street in the city centre. For further information visit First Group (for buses and coaches) and First Great Western (for trains).

An extensive motorway network links all major towns and cities. Be aware that distances in the UK are given in miles. To convert to kilometres, divide by five and then multiply by eight. For example, 50 miles is approximately 80 kilometres. You should also be aware that UK motorists drive on the left side of the road. The Highway Code, which is available from most UK bookshops and online, contains full details of all UK driving regulations and is essential reading for anyone planning to drive in the UK.

Local airports also serve most major UK cities and are a good transport option if you are planning to travel long distances within the UK, such as Bristol to Glasgow. You can fly from Bristol International Airport to various destinations in the UK, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle and Manchester. Please note that you will need your passport and visa documentation on the majority of UK mainland fights.
