What are some of the UK's basic laws on alcohol, weapons and drugs?

  • In the UK you must not carry any drugs with you (unless prescribed by a doctor or categorised as a general medicine, i.e. it is sold without prescription in any shop) or use any illegal drugs, including cannabis, ecstasy, LSD or amphetamines.
  • It is illegal to carry any sort of weapon, including knives, self-defence cs gas sprays, guns or stun guns.
  • You must be at least 16 to buy tobacco.
  • You must not drive a car without a valid licence and motor vehicle insurance. You must be at least 17 to obtain a provisional driving licence. For more information see UK licences.
  • You must be at least 18 to buy alcohol.

Note that many shops will require you to show an official ID that confirms your age to be able to buy tobacco or alcohol.

For questions and legal problems visit the Students' Union Law Clinic or refer to your University Student Handbook.
