Getting to know and making friends with British students may not be very easy, particularly if you are joining the programme as a second or third year student. British students tend to be younger and may not seem to make an effort to welcome and include international students into their social or study groups. If this is true for you, you could:
- try to join in some of the social events or volunteering opportunities organised by the University. At first no one will know anyone else, so you will all be looking for new friends.
- join one or more of the societies organised by the Students' Union, or get involved in organising one of the clubs (see your University Student Handbook). You can also become a member of a club or organisation outside the university (click here to find out more).
- have confidence and take the first step! Talk to a British student after class, in one of the cafes or invite someone to join you in some social activity. British students will respond positively if you take the first step and talk to them. They are just as nervous about starting conversation and understanding each other as you are.
If you feel isolated or lonely, you can contact the UWE Counselling and Psychological Service, 3F, Frenchay Campus, tel. (0117) 32 82558, who may be able to offer support.
