The law protects people living in residential property against harassment and illegal eviction. It does this in two ways: by making harassment and illegal eviction a criminal offence, and by enabling someone who is harassed or illegally evicted to claim damages through the civil court.
The law makes it an offence to:
- do something which may interfere with the peace or comfort of a tenant or anyone living with him or her; or
- withdraw or withhold services or facilities which the tenant needs.
If you believe that you are being harassed by your landlord, you should speak to your local council.
Alternatively, you can seek advice from:
- Accommodation Services,
- Student Advice and Welfare Services
- the Students' Union Advice Centre
- a law centre, a housing aid centre, or a solicitor
- the Bristol Citizens Advice Bureau (tel. 0870 121 2134).
Addresses of advice organisations are usually listed in the telephone directory or the local library, or from your local council.
The UWE Counselling and Psychological Service may be able to provide you with support if you feel you are experiencing stress as a result of your experience.
If physical violence was involved, you should telephone the local police on 0845 456 7000. You should only contact the emergency police service by phoning 999 if the violence is actually taking place or immediately following an act of violence.
