How are assignments, assessments and degrees graded at UWE?

Undergraduate degrees

Undergraduate degrees are marked out of 100%, but usually the top marks are between 70-80%. Receiving a mark above 80% is extremely difficult. In science, mathematics and computer science related degrees the top marks for more practical tests can be between 90-100%. For more information on assessments and passing grades, check your module handbook and the Academic Matters section of your University Student Handbook.

Degree classifications

A First Class Honours degree is the highest possible degree classification, often referred to as a 'first'.

A Second Class Honours degree - also called a 'second' -is the next highest classification, divided into an upper second division - 2:1 or 'two-one' - and a lower second division - 2:2 or 'two-two'.

A Third Class Honours degree - also called a 'third' - is the lowest passing classification.

You can find details on how to calculate your degree classification and the average marks required for each classification in the Academic Matters section of your University Student Handbook.

Postgraduate degrees

To pass a standard postgraduate module you need an average of at least 50% for the module. Taught postgraduate degrees are normally marked with a 'pass', 'pass with merit' or 'pass with distinction'. PhD degrees are usually not graded.
