University of the West of England

What is the European Credit Transfer Scheme and how does it affect me?

The credit rating of modules and other units of study available at the University is directly related to the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS), which is recognised by the University. In practice, the ECTS scale carries half of the credit value for each module/unit at UWE. A full year of full-time study is 60 credits on the ECTS scale and 120 on the UWE scale, although the notional study time is the same. Credit gained through ECTS while on an approved study exchange at a recognised institution outside the UK is shown in an additional column on the University Certificate of Credit and may count towards the award for which you are registered. ECTS is now recognised by most higher education institutions throughout the European Union.

If you begin your higher education studies at this University and, as part of your programme, wish to undertake a period of study in an approved higher education institution outside the EU, you should check that such a period of study is credit-rated and counts towards the total number of credits needed to gain the award for which you are registered. There is also the opportunity to study abroad without gaining marks or credits towards your award or without it being a required component of your degree.

You should note that the marks or grades awarded for any study undertaken in another institution will not contribute to the calculation of the class of your honours degree at UWE or to the award of a 'merit' or 'distinction' where these exist for other types of award.
