If you enter the UK as an international student, immigration conditions that apply to you will mean that you cannot normally claim UK welfare benefits. Similarly, there are no specific grants for international students with disabilities.
However, in certain limited circumstances UK social security benefits might be available. This depends on:
- your immigration status and any limitation or conditions put on you for your visit to the UK
- whether you are `habitually resident' in the UK.
Please contact Disability Services or Student Advice and Welfare Services for further advice and the most up to date information.
Please note that if you need assistance with day to day living you will generally need to fund it yourself. This can be expensive, as labour costs in the UK can be high in comparison to some countries, so it is essential that you treat it as an additional cost that you will have to budget for.
There may be some welfare benefits payable by the government of your own country that you can continue to receive whilst you are studying in the UK. These benefits may cover living costs or be payable to disabled people. Check with the authorities where you live.
