I have committed a criminal offence, how do I report this and who should I contact about it?

If you have committed a serious criminal offence you should contact the police, or contact a solicitor who can accompany you to the police. The Bristol Police telephone number is (0845) 456 7000. It is important to bear the following in mind:

  • try not to be aggressive
  • do not try to bribe the arresting police officer/s
  • give your name and address if asked to do so
  • do not sign any statement until you have received advice from a solicitor or lawyer (there is always a solicitor on call at the police station)

If you are arrested or detained for questioning, you will be entitled to make one free telephone call. You will also be offered free and independent legal advice and your rights will be explained to you. If you use your telephone call to contact a friend, urge your friend to contact your UWE faculty reception to report your circumstances.

If you are unsure if your involvement in the situation is important enough to contact the police, you may wish to speak to someone in the UWE Student Advice and Welfare Services, 3F Frenchay Campus, tel: (0117) 32 82822. They will advise you as to whether you need to take further action or not and whether you need to contact the police.

The UWE Counselling and Psychological Service, tel.(0117) 32 82558, or the Students' Union Advice Centre, tel.(0117) 32 82676 or ( 0117) 32 82571 may be able to provide you with support afterwards if necessary.
