What computer facilities are there at UWE and will I need to get a computer?

Computer facilities for students at UWE are regularly updated. Students are encouraged to use the PC Rooms available on each campus. There are over 2,000 student PCs throughout the university, including a 24-hour PC Lab at the Frenchay Campus containing 49 machines and 204 machines in the Bolland Library.

All students will have access to:

  • Microsoft Office 2003
  • internet and e-mail
  • dedicated storage
  • student laser printing service (Pharos)
  • remote access server (RAS)

In order to use the computer facilities within UWE you will need a user ID and a password to log in to the network. Your user ID will normally be issued at enrolment, but may be obtained from faculty offices. The user ID and password issued to you are also used to log in to other systems such as e-mail and UWEonline. Some systems such as the Remote Access Server (RAS) have separate registration via the web that must be completed before you can log in.

Your user ID and password must never be passed on to another person regardless of who that person is. The IT Support Centre, faculty and library staff provide support in using the available services. Your faculty will give you details of the IT provision on your campus and of the areas you will cover as part of the curriculum for your programme.

Further information can be found on the UWE website. In particular there are user guides and a frequently asked questions section on the IT Services website.

You are not required to have a computer at your term address, although you might find it useful. This is especially true for students living in UWE managed student accommodation, as the introduction of the UWE Residential Network or ResNet (connecting student rooms to the UWE network and the World Wide Web) has meant students are able to access the internet from 4,200 points installed in student accommodation using their own computer equipment. If you are entitled to use ResNet, Student Accommodation Services will give you a letter when you collect the key to your room.
